Toronto to Costa Rica 2010In February 2010 Shane Mahoney and John McCart will embark upon a 12,800 km journey from Toronto, Ontario to Jaco, Costa Rica and back. They will travel through a total of 8 countries over the course of 4 weeks in February 2010. They''ll be riding 2009 BMW F800GS's with several modifications which are listed on the Equipment List page.
This site will serve as a means for us to update family and friends, for you to track their progress, and to share information with other ADV adventurers.
This is not only a motorcycle trip for them, but a means to raise money and awareness of children's malnutrition in Guatemala. Both John and Shane feel privileged to be able to make a trip like this and realized early on that they could combine their `trip of a lifetime` with a cause that benefits others less than fortunate. They are raising funds for UNICEF which will be going directly to the village of Totonicapán in Guatemala. All donations are tax deductible and you can donate through the link on the left hand side. Shane and John specifically chose this cause, in conjunction with UNICEF, as it was something that they felt needed desperate funding and was an area that they would be travelling through on their journey. They will be travelling through this village on their trip and look forward to meeting with the UNICEF staff and people of Totonicapán. Click here to find out more detailed information about the cause they are supporting, where the money is going, and how this indigenous village has been severely impacted by poverty, malnourishment, and the need for basic essentials. If you would like to contribute to this cause, even $5, please click here to donate directly to UNICEF. Thank you in advance for your contributions. Please note, UNICEF utilizes a secure server and all funds are going directly to them.
The trip itself has been in the planning stages for nearly 12 months and was initially inspired by a blog that John read about a police officer from Kansas who rode with his 2 friends from his home state to the exact same place as they're going in Costa Rica. Further details about the trip, our itinerary, equipment, and even live tracking can be found on this site.
